The GREEN Mekong Program engages with multiple stakeholders to promote social equity on the ground, specifically in terms of forest governance and management policies and practices. The Program works with government officials to enhance their capacity to engage meaningfully with local communities. Likewise, the program partners with civil society to promote social equity and bring the grassroots perspectives to the policy makers.
With 450 million people living in and around forests in the Asia-Pacific region, the success of forest-based climate mitigation relies on actively involving local communities and indigenous people. Local people are not the only key players, but because of their sheer numbers and dependence on forests, they are critical for forest-based climate change initiatives to be sustainable.
